If I Was an Angel - Acoustic Version feat Rich Florey
‘If I Was an Angel’ was a song that I wrote back in 2009 for the first Pissed Off Catfish album, ‘Whiskey Whiskers’. I think the initial version of this song had something like 6 verses, so I cut it down to the verses I liked best (one of my favorite songwriting techniques) and for the album version we divided vocal duties between myself (verse 1), Jeff Stigelman (verse 2), and Bridgett Beck (verse 3). We layered on a ton of backing vocals for the chorus as well as lots of other instrumentation which resulted in a sonically complex arrangement with lots of sonic density.
I thought it might be fun to revisit this song with a stripped down acoustic arrangement but I wanted a little more ‘weight’ in the solo section so I employed the guitar talents of my good friend Rich Florey. I’m really happy with how it turned out. If you like this version definitely check out the album version from 2010 as it is a completely different take on the song.
Lyrics for “If I was an Angel”
I’ve seen nights that lasted so long
That my faith was shaken
And all my walls came closin in
Now I know for once in my life
That I’m living for something
And that something is you
All my life I’ve searched for crystal clear water
Oh but an old mud pit was all I ever saw
Cool green grass by the shores of the river
But there was something inside me
That always wanted more
Oh if I was an angel
I’d have flown far away from there
But as it stands, here I remain
No I’m not an angel
There’s evil inside me
It’s the life I was given
I don’t know no other way
So I left an I went to the city
The place where they told me
All my dreams would come true
Soon they found me on the edge of the water
One step from heaven
And that’s where I found you
Oh if I was an angel
I’d have flown far away from there
But as it stands, here I remain
No I’m not an angel
There’s evil inside me
It’s the life I was given
I don’t know no other way
